Music Video Research

A quick recap on class – you have tracks to find,  ideas to generate, proposals to write and planning to do. In class we mind mapped the research we need to do – and discussed why we need to do it.

You will write a proposal, and then pitch this to the band and/or your production group. It needs to both sound good (and remember, purpose 1 of the music video is to stick in the audience mind) and be feasible. So, while a lot of you research is in what other videos look like, what style tends to be used in that genre of music’s videos, and being creative about how you are going to deliver it, you need to then put your realist head and and ask – so, how do I do that?

A band or manager, on hearing an idea, are going to ask that anyway. Be prepared. We often fall in love with our own ideas, and are blind to the fact we don’t have the budget, technical know how, access or even ability to realise them. It can be a bit of a shock when someone asks that question that brings you down to earth with a bump – so do it yourself.

For each proposal, include a brief report on how all the car explosions, masses of dancing zombies, dance hall performers, mosh pit, robots, demons, night club sequences, fights, nuclear explosions etc are going to be included safely and within your lack of budget.

And no, you can’t just film your friend on a swing.
